Johnny Rumba
Instructor
Johnny is 100% full blooded Puerto Rican born in the Humboldt Park area of Chicago, IL and raised in Caguas, Puerto Rico. I remember music as always being a part of my environment. Music was always prevalent in the streets, in the parks and especially in my home. My first memories dancing Salsa were at the age of 7 with my mom. As a single parent it was only her and I and she would practice her moves with me while cleaning the house. Those are my fondest memories of salsa.
During my teenage years I participated in Salsa programs performing in festivals and special gatherings.
In the year 2000 I attended a program called the Joliet Job Corps, various students there had watched me dance and asked me to teach them. I organized dance classes for those who were interested in learning to dance Salsa and Merengue. That was my first time teaching a group of people in a classroom environment and it sparked something I n me to want to teach more.
Music continues to be a big part of my life. I have Dj'd at various night clubs which has given me the opportunity to meet different Salsa instructors from whom I have learned various dance techniques.
I take great pride in teaching my students the gift of dance and remind them that dancing is all about passion and soul. Justhave fun with it and the rest will follow.
