DANCE TEAMS

2008 Team Placement

2008 Ballet Placement

Dixon Dance Academy offers nine competition-level classes that focus on the joys and the compromises of being a part of a team. Although we do perform at a limited number of competitions each year, we prefer not to become a "competition school." We believe that dance is an art form, and art should be appreciated without being judged. However, we also believe that technique is an important part of the learning process at DDA, so we choose to participate in competitions in order to receive valuable professional critiques. We take these professional suggestions seriously to help both the dancers and choreographers advance their skills. In addition, we believe that competition can be fun, educational, and -- most of all -- inspiring for all involved.

We offer the following competition teams:

  • Tiny Team (ages 7-9)
  • Junior Jazz Team (ages 8-12)
  • Junior Tap Team (ages 8-12)
  • Intermediate Jazz Team (ages 11-14)
  • Hip Hop Team (ages 12 and up)
  • Intermediate Tap Team (ages 11-14)
  • Senior Jazz Team (ages 13-17)
  • Senior Tap Team (ages 13-17)
  • IMPACT Dance Company (ages 14-17)

Students must audition to be placed on a team. Check upcoming events calendar for dates and times.

Competitive jazz dancers must attend at least one ballet class per week in addition to their scheduled jazz class.

Competitive team dancers will be required to purchase the proper shoe and dancewear prior to the beginning of team classes in September. Check back soon for a list of current requirements.

Competitions charge entry fees ranging anywhere from $20-$50 per dancer, per routine. In addition, all competition team dancers are required to purchase higher-quality costumes for each competition routine. These costumes are purchased in November to ensure for timely arrival prior to competition, and usually cost between $60-$100 per costume.

Most competitions do NOT charge any entry fee for those who wish to sit in the audience to watch a competition. Viewers can usually come and go as they wish, and competition organizers usually offer a show program, dancewear, performance videos and souveniers for additional fees. Dancers can generally bring along water bottles and dry, healthy snacks to competitions to cut expenses, but rules do vary from competition to competition. Competition dance teams will review competition rules and etiquette prior to each competition.
